What Can Be Changed

I take a fist of yeast;
the grain of my skin darkens.

By accident, I bake a magpie
feather in the bread.

When the loaf breaks
open in my hands,

the feather is gone,
leaving a fossil imprint behind.

I experiment to see
what can be changed—

knead in stones
and the bread rises higher,

knead in wind chimes
and find a loaf of ice.

Knead pain
into the final loaf

and bake a bread
that can never be eaten alone.
