The mission of Alice James Books, a cooperative poetry press, is to seek out and publish the best contemporary poetry by both established and beginning poets, with particular emphasis on involving poets in the publishing process.
Dear Friends, Alice James Books is named for and inspired by Alice James, whose tremendous gift for writing went unrecognized during her lifetime. The Press was founded to ensure women's voices “had a chance” in a time when it was tremendously difficult to get published as a woman, who wasn't "writing like a man." And still, after 38 years of publishing, the legacy of our 7 founding members carries on in what we do, though we’ve expanded their original mission to include publishing a diverse range of poets and poetic styles. It's my hope that our endeavors will ensure the continued success of the press and availability of poetry to all who love to read it. We work earnestly to balance this mission with our budget each year; calculating our "wants" vs. our "cans" to ensure we accomplish our goals...and maybe just a little bit more. So much of the little "extras," in addition to our success and stability, rely on your generosity: we need your help to operate and to seek out and publish the best contemporary poetry.
