about the author

Beatrice Hawley (1944-1985) taught at Brandeis and first published with the encouragement of Denise Levertov. In addition to Making The House Fall Down, her first book, Hawley published one other, Nothing Is Lost (Apple-Wood). Her poetry appeared in the anthology Making for the Open (Chatto & Windus), and many periodicals, including Ploughshares, Mid-American Review, and The American Poetry Review. She founded an anti-nuclear coalition of writers, New England Writers for Survival. The Collected Poems of Beatrice Hawley (Zoland Books) was edited by Denise Levertov and published posthumously.
