Alice James' gift for writing went unrecognized during her lifetime. She could have had no idea that 100 years after her death she would be celebrated—her life and fine diary the subject of books, plays, essays and here, at Alice James Books, the inspiration for the naming of the press.

AJB's founders wanted to do their part in making sure women's voices "had a chance." As time went on, the press expanded that mission to give voice to a diverse range of poets and poetic styles. Now, 35 years later, it's more important than ever to remember our roots, and to ensure we can continue to support poets and poetry in the future.

The good news is we've had our share of honors and compliments. The bad news is that economically, times are tough, and we're seeing significant increases in many of our costs. We ended our last fiscal year with a deficit (thanks to some unexpected expenses and some increased ones), and are determined that won't happen again.

We have a plan, and you're an important part of that plan. In honor of our anniversary we're asking you to consider increasing your donation by 35%. If you've never made a donation before, we ask you to consider making AJB a first gift of $35.

If enough generous people "give us a chance," AJB can end the year in the black! AJB in the black means no cuts in staffing, advertising, or the quality of what we're doing.
