The Alice James Poetry Cooperative is pleased to announce that, beginning with 2006, the New England/New York Awards have been renamed the Kinereth Gensler Awards, in honor of the longtime cooperative member whose efforts have had such a lasting impact on the press.

Alice James Books will be accepting submissions of poetry manuscripts postmarked through October 1st, 2008. The Kinereth Gensler Awards welcome submissions from emerging as well as established poets. Entrants must reside in New England, New York State or New Jersey, beginning no later than December 1, 2008.

The Kinereth Gensler Awards winners receive $2000 and publication. Winners serve a 3-year term on the Alice James Books Editorial Board (click here for description), beginning with attendance at the January board meeting immediately following prize acceptance in December.

guidelines for manuscript submission

  1. Manuscripts must be typed, paginated, and 50 – 70 pages in length (single spaced).
  2. Individual poems from the manuscript may have been previously published in magazines, anthologies, or chapbooks of less than 25 pages, but the collection as a whole must be unpublished. Translations and self-published books are not eligible. No multi-authored collections, please.
  3. Manuscripts must have a table of contents and include a list of acknowledgments for poems previously published. The inclusion of a biographical note is optional. Your name, address, and phone number should appear on the title page of your manuscript. MANUSCRIPTS CANNOT BE RETURNED. Please do not send us your only copy.
  4. Send one copy of your manuscript submission with two copies of the title page. Use only binder clips. No staples, folders, or printer-bound copies.
  5. No illustrations, photographs or images should be included.
  6. The Kinereth Gensler Awards are judged by consensus of the members of the Alice James Books Editorial Board. Manuscripts are not read anonymously. Please click here for a description of our judging process.
  7. For notification of winners, include a business size SASE. If you wish acknowledgment of the receipt of your manuscript, include a stamped addressed postcard. Winners will be announced in December 2008.
  8. Entry fee for the Kinereth Gensler Awards is $25. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Alice James Books.
  9. If you wish to receive a free book (we will surprise, and hopefully delight you, with our choice) from our catalog, include a self-addressed envelope, at least 6" X 9", with $2.50 postage attached. (This is in addition to the business size SASE for notification.) Due to administrative and shipping costs, we are unable to send a book if these requirements are not met.
  10. Mail your entry to:
    Alice James Books
    Kinereth Gensler Awards

    Farmington, ME 04938
